Illinois falls in midweek contest, 10-9 overall on season
The offense couldn’t get going in extras.
The Illini have been inconsistent over the last four games, and it sent Illinois to a 2-2 record over the last week. Coming out of a low-scoring 2-1 Big Ten series against Minnesota over the weekend, Illinois was unable to secure the victory in the extra innings at Indiana State on Tuesday. The 4-3 defeat now puts the Fighting Illini’s record at 10-9.
Illinois started the first inning with little energy, amassing zero total hits. Once the second inning rolled around, Will Johannes would bring in some heat with a home run, followed by another by Jack Zebig. With nobody else on the bases, they were only able to score two runs.
The Indiana State Sycamores responded with three runs, but very little could be done by the Illini. Advancing through the top of the seven, Nick Groves brought back some hope with one more run to tie the game. Even with the extra innings, Illinois would end the same way they began: with zero hits.
Going 2-6 in away games, it seems that the Illini have bad luck on the road. They’ll be seeing the Sycamores again, but the Fighting Illini will have the home field advantage, so a redemption is still in the books for them. As Illinois prepares for its next Big Ten series, it must find success at bat in order to have any sort of opportunity at a conference win.
