Wetherholt focuses on tearing ‘the cover off the ball’ to reach MLB level

JJ Wetherholt has been watched closely by St. Louis Cardinal fans, media members and the organization itself since he was drafted seventh overall in the 2024 MLB June Amateur Draft by the Cardinals. He played his first full season with the organization in 2025 and slashed .

I was able to play in a lot of games, missed out on a couple because of sicknesses early in the year. … Body felt pretty solid going into the home stretch, which was good. … I got to experience Double-A and Triple-A and make those adjustments.

I was really happy with how I played and hopefully something I can build off of,” Wetherholt said during the Cardinals Caravan trip to Missouri Southern State University. When it comes to trying to earn his spot on the MLB roster by the end of spring training, he says the one key is hitting the ball and doing a lot of it. “Shoot, I mean, in this day and age it’s ‘hit and you can play,’” Wetherholt said.
