What Welsh clubs have to play for in URC run-in

International rugby is done and dusted until June, leaving clubs to focus on the final months of their seasons. The URC has bubbled away in the background since the end of January – there was a round in the Six Nations fallow week, rearranged fixtures were played last weekend and there have been South African derbies – but now all the attention is on the race for the top eight.

BBC Sport Wales looks at the state of play for the Welsh clubs. They are fifth and are just a point off second-placed Stormers with a 10-point buffer over Connacht in ninth.

Cardiff have claimed a match point from all 12 rounds so far, and in the four campaigns of the URC the final play-off spot has been earned by 48 points twice and 50 points twice. Corniel van Zyl's men, who were pipped to eighth by Scarlets by a point in 2025, are currently on 40. However, a word of warning.

Cardiff are in South Africa for a tough double-header against Bulls and Sharks while they also have a trip to leaders Glasgow to come. Welsh derbies against Scarlets and Ospreys – whose owners controversially want to take over at the Arms Park – will be vital. "We are in a nice position but we are well aware how quickly that can change," said fly-half Callum Sheedy.
