Williamsburg fans stand behind the Blue Devils trips to Hershey
(WTAJ) — Williamsburg girls basketball is in the 1A championship Friday, playing for a title for the first time since 1997, and there is no doubt the small town of 1,200 people will be there to watch. “We’re a really small school with a huge community that comes out and supports us,” said head coach Angela Detwiler, Tuesday after the team’s 60-41 win over St. Joeseph’s Catholic in the state semifinals.
On Tuesday, fans in blue and white packed the Altoona Field House, as they often do. The small school has one of the biggest and proudest fan bases. Detwiler said that’s part of what makes coaching there so special.
Berlin makes it back-to-back titles, taking down Neshannock in Hershey “It’s hard to put into words how much this community means to us,” she said. “But the reason they’re all here is because we’re all a part of it. When they’re five years old, we have them in the gym.
People in the community are donating facilities, donating money, and it takes all of us. ” Williamsburg plays Delco Catholic Friday at noon, a Knights team that’s won 18-straight games. The Blue Pirates will be the underdog against the District 1 champions.
They’ll look for big games from upperclassmen Leeann Royer and Levada Gorsuch, but has seen its cast of freshman step up in key moments throughout the postseason. “I’m just so proud of this team,” said Detwiler. “We went through a lot of adversity this season and they’ve overcome all of it.
