The fifth-year big man signed for the Celtics during the summer, after struggling to cement himself in Chris Finch’s rotation on the Minnesota Timberwolves. While there were no concerns about Garza’s offensive ability, questions were raised about whether he could meet the level of defense Mazzulla asks of his team. However, as the season has worn on, Garza has shown legitimate development in his game, both offensively as a screener and defensively when playing in drop.

During a recent interview with Spencer Davies of RG. org, Garza explained that coming into the season, he and the rest of Boston’s young and unproven talent all had the mentality of using the 2025-26 campaign to prove themselves and that they belonged in the NBA. “We all had a mindset, not only just individually to do that, but also collectively to show that we could prove ourselves through winning, and winning at a high level,” Garza said.

“And so, I think, that's been pretty special being part of this group. And then now, obviously, bringing back one of the best players in the world, it's exciting for all of us to continue to kinda go on this run and figure out how we can be as good as we can. ” Garza is currently enjoying some additional playing time due to Nikola Vucevic’s absence with a right finger fracture.
