105-year-old mascot cheers on local team

A 105-year-old Portsmouth fan met players and received gifts after being invited to Fratton Park.

Joan Geary, 105, was given a signed football during her trip to watch Portsmouth [Cosham Court Nursing Home] A 105-year-old football fan was a matchday mascot for her local team. Joan Geary, a resident at Cosham Court Nursing Home, attended Portsmouth Football Club's game against Derby County on 16 March as part of a surprise organised by Pompey in the Community . The lifelong supporter met players, received a signed football and was presented with a personalised T-shirt reading "Nan".

Staff said the experience left the great-grandmother "beaming with pride and joy". Joan, who was previously treated to a visit to the ground for her birthday, was once again given the chance to see her team up close. As part of the day, she was also presented with a bouquet of flowers and had the opportunity to meet players.

Although the result did not go Portsmouth's way - losing 0-1 - staff said the occasion itself had a lasting impact. Joan has been a lifelong supporter of Portsmouth Football Club [Cosham Court Nursing Home] Charisma Williams, home manager at Cosham Court said: "Since the visit, Joan has been beaming with pride and joy and she hasn't stopped talking about it," she said. "Being such a loyal Pompey supporter, the evening meant the world to her.
