Why 49ers have to decide on Trent Williams' future this week
The San Francisco 49ers and offensive tackle Trent Williams have had contract negotiations this offseason, but something needs to happen now.
While the San Francisco 49ers have been busy re-signing some of their own free agents and acquiring players who spent last year with other teams, they've also been working on trying to keep one of their own happy. With offensive tackle Trent Williams entering the final year of his contract, the two sides have to come to a decision on their future together. Will the 49ers give him an extension, or will they move on from the 37-year-old before his contract voids?
San Francisco actually needs to make that decision this week, as Williams is set to receive a $10 million roster bonus on Friday, March 20. They could quickly try to trade Williams before that to get value back in this year's draft or in the form of a player, or they could simply release him and save money. However, if he receives that bonus, that's more cap space getting eaten up that could be completely unnecessary.
Having Williams on the roster may give the 49ers their best chance of winning in 2026, but moving on from him could allow them to free up money and prepare for the future.
