How was Rueben Chinyelu discovered and ultimately turn into the NCAA's best rebounder and defensive player? Here's his story.
TAMPA — The Rueben Chinyelu Story, of course, begins in Nigeria, where he was born and raised and discovered a love for team and basketball. But the tale of how Chinyelu became the nation’s best rebounder, a national champion for Florida and a fan favorite for his tenacity and enthusiasm began far away from Africa … and Pullman, Wash. … and Gainesville.
It started in Mexico City. At a tournament for international players. And before a crowd which included a Washington State assistant who rushed to book a flight on the recommendation of a contact organizing the event.
“This kid would be a great project and has the potential to be good, but it will take time,” John Andrzejek remembered telling himself. The time has really arrived this season for Chinyelu. An emerging talent in 2023-24 for Washington State and an every-game starter last year for the Gators, Chinyelu is in the midst of a five-month coming out party.
Eighteen double-doubles, tied for eighth in Division I. Third nationally in rebounds (11. 5 average).
