A big summer is ahead for the CSU men's basketball team after the Rams crested the 20-win mark but lost in the first round of the NIT.
About as weird a final minute as one could find and the season is over. The Colorado State men’s basketball team lost 69-64 to Saint Joseph’s on March 18 in the first round of the NIT. Saint Joseph’s led almost the whole game before the Rams rallied to tie inside the final minutes.
The Hawks made a last surge before CSU tried to push back but a technical in the final seconds finished the game. Here are takeaways from the game. Weird and whacky finish CSU (21-13) trailed pretty much throughout the game.
In the second half the Hawks (23-11) held a lead between five and nine points pretty much the whole time. Until the Rams made a surge. Rashaan Mbemba had a free throw to tie it at 59 with 1:24 to go for the first tie since it was 4-4.
But Saint Joseph’s immediately responded, with Austin Williford hitting a contested 3-pointer with 56 seconds to go. That turned into a 7-0 Saint Joseph’s run to go up 66-59 with 26 seconds left. Again, CSU fought back.
