March Madness fuels surge in sports betting across North Carolina
During the past two NCAA tournaments alone, North Carolina has generated more than $18 million in tax revenue from sports betting. That money supports gambling addiction programs, youth sports and college athletic departments. The growth comes as the state marks two years since legalizing sports wagering.
In just the past two Marches, bettors have wagered a combined $1. 3 billion. The NCAA tournament, known for its unpredictability, continues to draw in both casual fans and bettors.
From buzzer beaters to Cinderella runs, the NCAA tournament is all about the unexpected. For some, betting adds another layer to the experience. Kyle Webb, a North Carolina bettor, said he views sports betting as an extension of filling out a bracket.
“I kind of consider sports betting something along the same lines where you’re picking different teams to win,” Webb said. “It’s just a different way to compete between friends. ” Webb said he typically places small bets — often just a few dollars.
“I can put $5 on the game and it’s just something fun to cheer about, especially if you don’t have a rooting interest,” he said. He emphasized the importance of staying within limits. “Being able to know your limits is definitely key,” Webb said.
