Spring forward into spring sports
The Seaside boys golf team began its title defense trying to replace three top scorers from last season while Knappa and Seaside baseball teams stepped up to bat for the first time on Monday afternoon. The Loggers took on Rainier and Seaside hosted future Cowapa league opponent Banks to open up the season. Seaside boys golf tees off with work to do Seaside golf coach Jim Poetsch gave an honest assessment of his team after the opening round at the Canby Invitational.
The Seagulls entered 2026 with work to do. They were looking to replace Logan Norman, Alex Arden and Madden Wunderlich from last season’s state championship team. A star studded tournament featuring mostly 6A schools was exactly what the doctor ordered for the ‘Gulls.
With three reigning team champions and three defending individual state champions from last season, this tournament was as loaded as any the Seagulls will play in this season. Seaside joined 6A state champions Lake Oswego and 3A/2A/1A state champions Bandon as three of the 20 teams on the course. They were also joined by individual champions from 6A, 5A and 3A/2A/1A.
Two-time defending state champion Drew Woolworth represented Lake Oswego, Connor Holby represented 5A Canby and Benny Zhu represented Valley Catholic as the 2024 3A/2A/1A champion. The Seagulls finished tied with 3A powerhouse Bandon for 15th place, as both teams shot a 351. West Linn took the victory over Lake Oswego with a team score of 309.
The 3A Banks made a resounding early statement as the school finished well ahead of both Seaside and Bandon with a team score of 336, to finish in a tie for ninth place with 5A Canby. Returning standout Xanh Quang carried the Seagulls on his back as he shot a one over 73 to finish in a third place tie with Woolworth. The pair also finished one stroke ahead of Holby.
