Chargers free agency: LA re-signs Tony Jefferson

The Los Angeles Chargers are bringing back a reliable veteran on the back end of the defense.

The  Chargers  have reached an agreement to re-sign veteran safety Tony Jefferson to a one-year, $2 million contract for the 2026 season. This marks the third consecutive year that Jefferson has signed a one-year deal with the team since coming out of retirement in 2024. Jefferson, 34, is coming off a resurgent 2025 campaign, where he recorded a career-high four interceptions and seven passes defensed in just 13 games.

According to Pro Football Focus, he allowed a passer rating of just 36. 7 in coverage, ranking third among all safeties Jefferson's veteran leadership and reliability were key for the defense last year. Now, he is expected to provide critical depth behind starters Derwin James Jr.
