Rams Struggle in AFC Divisional Round Despite Bad Luck

Yahoo Sports

The Rams have plugged most of their roster holes already this offseason, but backup quarterback is one spot that needs addressing.

The Los Angeles Rams have crossed a lot of things off their offseason checklist, namely cornerback and safety. They also added to their special teams unit with Grant Stuard and Joe Cardona, while also bringing back Tyler Higbee, Harrison Mevis and Justin Dedich. Even with all the moves Los Angeles has made, the work isn’t done.

ESPN’s Bill Barnwell picked each contender’s biggest weakness and for the Rams, he identified backup quarterback. That’s hardly a major concern, which shows how stacked Los Angeles’ roster is right now. The only position that would really scare me right now if I were the Rams is at quarterback, which is weird to say given that the reigning league MVP will be returning (after his usual contract renegotiation) in 2026.

Matthew Stafford  was healthy and wildly productive last season, but you might remember that the Rams starter's status for Week 1 was uncertain all summer as he battled  back issues . So, what’s the solution? Barnwell suggests the Rams re-sign Jimmy Garoppolo, who remains a free agent and one of the top quarterbacks on the market still.

Garoppolo has been Stafford’s backup for the last two years and the coaching staff loves him. Right now, Stetson Bennett is the only backup quarterback on the roster but he’s only been the QB3 in the last two years, so he may not be ready to ascend to a true backup role. Barnwell also floated the possibility of signing Carson Wentz, who knows the system from his time with the Rams, while also questioning whether there will be someone Los Angeles likes at No.
