His impact was decisive across both legs—three goals in the first match to tilt the tie, followed by a tireless, all-action performance in Manchester that combined defensive sacrifice with attacking support.

Clarence Seedorf, a former Real Madrid midfielder and one of the most respected voices in the game, reflected on Valverde’s rise after the tie in comments to Amazon Prime Sport . The Dutchman shared an early memory from their time together as coach and player at Deportivo La Coruna: “When I arrived at Deportivo, Valverde was there. I didn’t know who he was, but after 10 minutes of the first training session I told my assistant to put him in the starting XI.

I knew I was going to play with him and 10 others. ” Seedorf pointed to the Uruguayan’s raw potential even then. “You could already see the quality he had and how far he could go.

He didn’t have the level he has now, but you could see his potential. I am very proud of him. ”
