Who's Bringing Down the Aggie Line This Season?

New Texas A&M defensive coordinator Lyle Hemphill discussed his transition, and who will likely call plays during the 2026 season.

Texas A&M's 2026 spring practice season will begin on Friday, and just three months into the offseason, third-year head coach Mike Elko elevated five coaches to new positions, including Holmon Wiggins as the program's new offensive coordinator, while assistant Lyle Hemphill has replaced Jay Bateman as defensive coordinator. These elevations were unsurprising given Elko's affinity to keep his staff familiar year after year, especially if the results speak for themselves, and while this is Holmon Wiggins has not called offensive plays in his career, he did spend the last two seasons as the Aggies' co-offensive coorindintor, working closely with with Collin Klein, who has since departed to become Kansas State's head coach. Hemphill , who served as Elko's linebackers coach during his short two-year stint at Duke, was hired as James Madison's defensive coordinator before making his way back onto Elko's staff in College Station last season.

With his experience as a playcaller, Hemphill's background with Elko dates back 20 years, and both coaches are on the same page from a scheme perspective. "We just kept in touch. Every offseason, we'd get together.

We talked weekly about schematics and personnel. We just always kept in touch, and schematically, we stayed in the same cylinder a little bit. " "He has been my mentor for pretty much 20 years, so it was an easy decision.

" Now, the question every Aggie fan is wondering: Who will call Texas A&M's defense in 2026? Answer? Likely Mike Elko.
