Former Boston Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman was in the clubhouse when 21-year-old superstar Roman Anthony made his MLB debut against the Tampa Bay Rays last July.

Two months later, Anthony suffered an oblique strain that sidelined him for the remainder of the 2025 season. Anthony is set to return to the Red Sox lineup after the World Baseball Classic, but he will be without Bregman, his teammate and mentor. A reality that Anthony says he is not looking forward to after being reunited on Team USA.

โ€œHeโ€™s helped me up until this point more than anyone probably in the big league level,โ€ Anthony said to Alex Speier of the Boston Globe. โ€œBeing with him last year and learning from him and the way that he has been as good as he is and the way that he game-plans and everything, and knowing that he just transforms a clubhouse, Iโ€™ve already told him a little bit and joking with him, Iโ€™m sad to leave him. โ€ The Red Sox added loads of talent this offseason, but were unable to retain the two-time World Series champion.

Bregman made the All-Star team in his one season with Boston after signing a three-year, $120 million contract. He opted out of the final two years, instead choosing to take a five-year deal with the Chicago Cubs worth $175 million, taking less AAV for more years.
