Head Coach Gary Redus II Steps Up for Rutgers' Women's Basketball Season 2023-24!
A few takeaways from Gary Redus’ press conference.
After his hire was announced early last week, Rutgers women’s basketball hosted the official introductory press conference for new head coach Gary Redus II today. The event gave Redus his first chance to address the Rutgers community. Takeaways One of the major takeaways from Redus’ press conference was the emphasis on keeping local talents at home.
Redus has been all over the country recruiting for LSU and has earned himself a reputation as a very good recruiter along with that. In his press conference, he mentions how he believes that Rutgers is in one of the best recruitment spots for women’s basketball and that he no longer has to take a long flight to reach a recruit. According to Redus, now he can drive to a lot of the recruits he needs to see in person and hopefully convince them to stay home.
Another major takeaway from his press conference came after NJ. com’s Steve Politi asked what kind of style of play he wanted to run. His response: “I want to play fast, I want to get the ball moving, I really want to space the floor and not so much run set after set after set.
I really want to teach ball movement and player movement. ” He mentioned the system run by Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White, whom Redus worked with during his time at Vanderbilt, and how he wanted to create a similar system. It appears that Rutgers women’s basketball will at least be adopting a more modern style of play under Redus.
