Middies-Mints Lead Thrashing Victory for Championship Chasing Squad!
Mar. 17—GRAND FORKS — While a blizzard raged outside Devils Lake High School last Thursday, an intense Region 2B championship game unfolded inside. North Star had already earned a spot in the state qualifier earlier in the evening by cruising past North Border in the third-place contest.
Midway-Minto and Nelson County went head-to-head in the title game, each intent on securing its first-ever Division B state tournament appearance as co-ops. The Mustangs, who had dispatched the Bearcats in the quarterfinals, pulled away in the second half to secure the win and finish atop a region with plenty of depth. Nelson County and North Star proved just how deep Region 2 was this season just a few days later.
Both teams won their respective qualifying tilts in Fargo. "I think that shows how good our region is, how well-balanced it was," Midway-Minto head coach Shane Robinson said. "Every night was a battle.
And I think we were able to go out there and play with anybody at any time because of what we've been able to do at this point of the season. " The region's parity was on full display throughout the tournament. North Star edged out Park River/Fordville-Lankin, the No.
1 seed out of District 3, 64-61 in the quarterfinals. The District 4 No. 1 seed, Langdon Area-Munich, suffered a 54-38 loss to North Border in the quarterfinals.
