The new-look Spread Eagle, renamed The Blue Eagle, will feature multiple TV screens and an outdoor fan zone close to Roots Hall. Renovation work has begun with the aim of opening for the Shrimpers' final home game of the National League season on 25 April.

Chairman Justin Rees said the pub had "huge character", adding: "This is a really exciting moment for the football club. " The move comes despite the Blues announcing a staff restructuring in February that could result in redundancies, saying the club was operating "at a significant financial loss". It was founded in the Blue Boar , which neighbours The Spread Eagle in Victoria Avenue.
