Doug wonders why Rick Barnes' teams don't peak in March. Colorado Mark hopes Ryan Staub gets fair shake with the Vols.

Tennessee basketball comes first for my literary contributors in March. But spring football isn't far away. And some of my readers are especially curious about Colorado transfer Ryan Staub and UT's quarterback situation.

Doug writes: As we approach March Madness, Vol fans are reminded that the men's team has never reached The Final Four. Also, under Rick Barnes, we too often lose in the tournament to what seem to be inferior teams on paper. Why do you think Coach Barnes' teams typically peak in January and not in March?

My response: The Vols practice hard, so maybe they wear down over the course of the season. Or maybe, they just haven’t been talented enough. If I had the answer, I would tell Barnes, who would make a correction, and the Vols would be off and running to the Final Four.

Just kidding. Coaches – especially those headed for the hall of fame – don’t listen to sports columnists. Shemp writes: Barnes’ team is schizophrenic in playing like a high school team for a half and then like a top ten team for the other half in most games.
