There was the first Naugatuck Valley League title in program history, and a first state quarterfinal victory.

After Monday night's tight 62-56 Division IV semifinal win over a solid No. 5 Cromwell at North Haven High School, Woodland can add another first to its list. The Hawks (26-0) are headed to their first state championship game.

Woodland will face No. 6 Windham Tech, a 53-41 winner over No. 7 Abbott Tech, for the D-IV crown Saturday or Sunday at Mohegan Sun Arena.

Woodland senior Markell Brown scored the game's final basket on a fast break layup before the final buzzer went off. Before that, there was a huge 3-pointer by senior captain James Scampolino. His 3 from the corner in front of the Woodland bench gave the Hawks a 56-50 lead with 1:44 remaining in the game.
