San Francisco holds leverage as receiver Brandon Aiyuk's future remains uncertain. The 49ers wait for the opportune moment to maximize his trade value.

The situation between the San Francisco 49ers and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk continues to be one of the more complicated storylines of the offseason. While many around the league expect the two sides to eventually part ways, the 49ers do not appear to be in any rush to make that move. Speculation about Aiyuk’s future has been ongoing for months.

The veteran receiver did not play during the 2025 season after suffering significant ACL and MCL injuries in 2024, and tensions between the player and the organization have reportedly lingered since then. At one point last year, Aiyuk essentially cut off communication with the team, creating further uncertainty about his long-term future in San Francisco. Despite those issues, the 49ers still hold significant leverage in the situation.

According to Adam Schefter, San Francisco is expected to eventually move on from Aiyuk, but the organization isn’t planning to do so immediately. Speaking on ESPN, Schefter explained that the team’s flexibility with Aiyuk’s contract allows them to be patient. “There’s no guaranteed money left in his contract,” Schefter noted.

“So they can hold onto him for the time being. They can hold onto him through the draft and see if they can flip him for a pick at that point in time. They can hold onto him until June.
