The junior twins from Washington did their part throughout the weekend to help William Penn post a winning homestand with a four-hit complete-game shutout lifting the Statesmen to a 3-0 win over Peru State in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday, opening a doubleheader sweep of the Bobcats.
Laila Smith, who caught all 14 innings that her sister pitched during the four-game homestand, stepped up throughout the weekend at the plate connecting on a pair of run-scoring hits to drive in all three runs for William Penn in a 6-3 loss to open Friday's doubleheader against Culver-Stockton. Smith added two more doubles, a tiebreaking solo home run in the third inning and a game-tying seventh-inning hit that helped rally the Statesmen to a 9-8 victory in the nightcap against the Wildcats salvaging the home-opening split.
