The Los Angeles Chargers are a fascinating watch this offseason, because there are clear areas of need on the roster, but there doesn't appear to be a willingness to go big and get key players.
Yes, the franchise made a couple of shrewd signings, and with Mike McDaniel as the new offensive coordinator, some thought the franchise could lean into getting more help for Justin Herbert. Tyler Biadasz, Keaton Mitchell, and Charlie Kolar have come aboard, but they aren't difference-makers. So, it is a little odd that a team with so much cap room doesn't want to spend it.
For Sports Illustrated's Matt Verderame, in his good, bad, and ugly piece on free agency, L. A. 's lack of spending has landed in the ugly category.
"If the Chargers are ever going to win a Super Bowl, they have to spend like a team attempting to win a championship," Verderame wrote . "Going into free agency, the only teams with more cap space were the Raiders and Titans . Both spent like sailors on leave.
