Lion Baseball Triumphs Over Washburn in Exciting Victory!
Missouri Southern State University's baseball team completed a three-game sweep of the Washburn University Ichabods with a pair of wins Saturday at Warren Turner Field. In Saturday’s Game 1, the teams combined for 32 runs, with the Lions coming out on top 17-15. Washburn (8-15, 5-6) led 3-0 after the top of the second inning, but the Lions plated four runs in the bottom of the frame to earn their first lead.
The Ichabods answered with a pair of runs in the top of the third, but MSSU tied the game at 5 in the bottom of the inning. Washburn scored three in the fourth and held the Lions to two runs in the bottom of the inning. The Ichabods took an 11-7 lead after the top of the fifth, but Southern’s bats exploded for five runs in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead at 12-11 going into the sixth.
Each team plated two runs in the sixth, but they were unable to put a run across in the seventh. The Lions extended their lead to 17-13 in the bottom of the eighth and held the Ichabods to two runs in the top of the ninth to claim the 17-15 win. Blake Jones finished 3 for 5, including a solo home run.
Jones logged five runs and three RBIs. Brayden Luikart was 3 for 5 with three RBIs and a run. Cy Darnell finished 2 for 5 with three RBIs and two runs, and Jacob Filip was 2 for 4 with three runs.
Carter Stover (2-1) earned the win for Southern. Marcus Young earned the save, giving up no runs and no hits. In Game 2, the Lions homered four times — including three in the first inning — and logged a 7-5 win.
