On Sunday, the Eagles re-signed tight end Dallas Goedert on a one-year, $7 million deal. It was a good deal for both sides. But if Goedert wanted to leave Philadelphia after eight seasons, he would have had the opportunity to do so.
The Broncos had interest in signing Goedert, according to Sports Illustrated NFL reporter Albert Breer. The 31-year-old tight end might have had a bigger role in Denver’s passing offense than he will with the Eagles next season. A handful of NFL teams could have offered him a better role, but he wanted to return to Philadelphia and the Eagles needed him back.
Philadelphia would have faced a $20. 5 million dead cap hit if they didn’t re-sign Goedert before his contract voided on Monday. The Eagles and Goedert’s camp even pushed the void deadline back twice this week — from Wednesday to Friday, and then from Friday to Monday — to finalize an extension.
Goedert could still thrive in Philadelphia next season as a red-zone target. This past year, he snagged 60 receptions for 591 yards and broke a franchise record for most touchdowns (11) in a single season by a tight end. The Eagles are not committing to Goedert long term.
