Wildcats Triumph Handily, 4-0, Surprising Everyone with Thrilling Showdown!
Pure dominance from the ‘Cats
Northwestern softball dominated in Highland Heights, Kentucky this past weekend, sweeping four games against Detroit Mercy, Northern Kentucky and Northern Iowa. The Wildcats controlled the weekend from start to finish, as they outscored their opponents 45-8 over four games, while winning three of them on a run-rule. The series marked a major turnaround and confidence booster the ’Cats needed after getting swept by Washington.
While these opponents were clearly inferior programs, this success against them flexed Northwestern’s star power and showcased what the team can look like when it’s clicking in all cylinders. Game 1: Northwestern 11, Detroit Mercy 2 (run-rule, five innings) Northwestern’s offense came to play early, taking advantage of some defensive miscues and a big swing from Bridget Donahey to stamp four runs on the board in the first inning. It started with Emma Raye smacking an RBI triple to left center that scored Grace Nieto, who had reached base on a throwing error.
Then, Kansas Robinson also reached base on a fielding error, which scored Raye from third. With Robinson on first, the ‘Cats got their first earned run of the game, with Donahey mashing a home run to center field that plated Robison and made it a 4-0 start. The offense would continue to tack on runs in the top of the second, with a single from Kaylie Avvisato driving home Tru Medina.
Nieto, who again reached base on a fielding error, advanced to third on Avvisato’s hit, and came around to score on a subsequent sacrifice fly from Raye. With Avvisato still on base, Donahey stepped up to the plate and, almost poetically, hit another two-run long ball hat doubled both her home run total on the day along with the 8-0 score. Detroit Mercy got on the board in the bottom half of the inning, with Wendy Ketola launching a two-run home run.
