From Spirit to Legacy: Traveling 820 miles in two days for two NWSL home openers

When the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) released its 2026 regular season schedule, it aligned two must-watch matches back-to-back to start the new campaign. The season opened with the Washington Spirit hosting the Portland Thorns on Friday night in Washington, D. C.

— a reunion for U. S. women’s national team players Trinity Rodman and Sophia Wilson, two-thirds of the 2024 Olympics scoring trio called “Triple Espresso” — followed by one of the league’s two newest teams, Boston Legacy, which made its home debut on Saturday.

This had me wondering: why choose between the Spirit’s home opener and Boston’s debut? From New Jersey to D. C.

, to Boston, and back, I traveled 820 miles in two days to watch both matches. I witnessed Wilson’s triumphant return to the Thorns and soaked in the intoxicating scenes at Gillette Stadium. The cost of two Amtrak rides, a domestic flight and two single-night hotel stays in D.

C. and near Boston totaled $701 — but the real cost may have been the hard reset on my circadian rhythm from repeated 4 a. m.
