The Philadelphia Phillies explored several options during the offseason to improve their roster, but one potential signing never went very far.
Slugger Pete Alonso recently said that there were brief discussions between him and the Phillies before they ultimately committed to re-signing Kyle Schwarber. Alonso, one of the best power hitters in baseball, was among the notable names on the free agent market this winter. Several teams around the league were expected to at least check in on the former New York Mets star to show potential interest.
For the Phillies, however, any potential signing of Alonso never got going. According to Alonso, the talks between the two sides were brief, as Philadelphia decided to go with Schwarber. “There was a little bit of dialogue, very, very early, more of a ‘Hey, how you doing?
’ type of thing,” said Alonso, per NBC Sports Philly. “But they were like, ‘All our eggs are with Schwarbs. ’” Alonso’s comments show just how committed the Phillies were to keeping Schwarber in the middle of their lineup.
