Hot Debut, Expectations Soar for Devin Bush in NFL Year
The Chicago Bears' signing of linebacker Devin Bush was one of the best moves made in free agency so far.
The Chicago Bears have not made the flashy or big signing during this NFL offseason, but they have made a concerted effort to fill their voids properly. When the team released veteran linebacker Tremaine Edmunds, they moved quickly to replace him with another veteran, known for his speed, in Devin Bush. The former first-round pick is coming off the best season of his career with the Cleveland Browns, including three interceptions, two of which were returned for touchdowns.
In the first wave of free agency, while the Bears have not made the "big" move as they did prior to the 2025 season, they have been praised for the signing of Bush. NFL. com's Next Gen analytics team listed the Bears' signing of Bush as one of the best free agency acquisitions this offseason.
Here's what they said about Bush joining Chicago and how he fits Dennis Allen's defense: "Dennis Allenโs defense is based out of Cover 2, which relies on highly athletic linebackers to account for significant space in the middle of the field. After releasing Tremaine Edmunds, the Bears were left with just two off-ball LBs on the roster who played 50+ snaps last season, and neither is a natural Cover 2 anchor," The article said. "Enter Bush, who allowed 0.
49 yards per coverage snap last season, the second-fewest of any linebacker who logged at least 250 coverage snaps. He also recorded three interceptions (returning two for touchdowns) while allowing just one touchdown. He and Edmunds were two of the 14 LBs who were trusted to play man-to-man over 20% of the time, suggesting Allen will continue to cater to Bush's strengths.
