Colin Calderwood became Northampton technical director 14 months ago [Getty Images] Northampton Town interim boss Colin Calderwood says he has a clear idea about what sort of candidate they need as the club's next manager. Technical director Calderwood has been in charge since the sacking of Kevin Nolan, but they lost to Burton Albion on Saturday and have only one win in their last 17 games. Time is running out if they are to avoid relegation, and the Scot, who will be part of the panel to choose Nolan's successor, is set to meet chairman Kelvin Thomas and other board members later this week to discuss the matter.

"I think they should have a profile of what they want. I've got my own ideas about it and I think that's part of the role; you've got to put your own viewpoint across," Calderwood said. "Between what I think and what they think, we've got to come to some agreement.

It'll be a consensus rather than someone dictating what the situation is. "No doubt there'll be some decent candidates. It's their decision at the end of the day, but part of my job is to have an idea of what I think a coach should look like and a manager should look like at Northampton and then use that.

" Calderwood, who previously managed Northampton from 2003 to 2006, will remain in charge for Tuesday's game at Stockport County. They are currently next to bottom, six points from safety, and following the game at Stockport, they will have only eight more to try and secure the club's third-tier status for next season. He believes that based on what he saw in the 2-0 loss to Burton, the team may need to be slightly more direct from now on.

"We're chasing all the teams above us, chasing the situation and trying to get out of the relegation zone, so the balance of our threat has got to be larger," he told BBC Radio Northampton. "Some of it might take a little bit of patience and a slower build-up, but the other version is how direct can we be? "To make it perfect is going to take time, so we just have to put the ball in the opposition's box earlier as much as possible, maybe from further away.
