With five worthy candidates who shined last week, you decide who the lohud Girls Basketball Player of the Week should be.
Remarkably, each of the five Section 1 champions prevailed in their respective regional tournaments last week and advanced to the state semifinals. Section 1 will be the most represented section in the final four, ahead of Section 2. Within that, of course, were several outstanding performances that produced for us five candidates for Girls Basketball Player of the Week, presented by White Plains Hospital.
Our previous poll winners this season were Abby Nadborny (Scarsdale), Maria Ribeiro (Hen Hud), Jade Jackson (White Plains), Phoebe Greto (Rye), Riley Waters (Lakeland), Peyton Forde (Harvey School), Elyse Smith (Hen Hud), Eliana Contreras (Somers), Reese Carlo (Kennedy Catholic), Kendall Konigsberg (Blind Brook), Natalia Gabriele (Woodlands), Maddy Horel (North Salem) and Emilee Doherty (Yonkers Montessori). Maya Corniel, Nyack She had 21 points, including going 5 for 5 on three-pointers in the opening 10 minutes, to lead the RedHawks in 55-40 win over Westhampton from Long Island in the Class AA regional final, advancing to the state semifinals for the first time since 1983.
Corniel also scored 10 second-half points to help them stave off Section 9's Warwick in the regional semifinal. Adrianna D'Orio, Tappan Zee The senior has carried a torrid shooting stretch through their biggest postseason games thus far. She scored 21 points, including six 3-pointers, to lead the Dutchmen in a 47-44 win over Long Island's Plainedge in the Class A regional final on Sunday.
