Kansas City has a new backup quarterback for 2026.

With incumbent backup passer Gardner Minshew having signed with the Arizona Cardinals last week, a looming question after free agencyโ€™s first wave was who would the team bring in behind Mahomes.

We now know the answer. Trade: the New York Jets are finalizing a deal that will send QB Justin Fields to the Kansas City Chiefs, pending a physical, per ESPN sources. Other teams were interested, but Fieldsโ€™ preference was to go to Kansas City.

Schefter adds that Fields specifically chose Kansas City over other interested teams. The insider later reported that Kansas City will be sending New York a sixth-round selection in the 2027 NFL draft as compensation for Fields. The Chicago Bears took Fields out of Ohio State with the 11th overall selection of the 2021 NFL Draft.
