The club said emergency teams were called shortly before the 19:45 kick-off of the United Rugby Championship match at the Hive Stadium in Edinburgh. Managing director Douglas Struth said despite "valiant efforts of first responders", the fan died shortly before half time.

He said in a statement: "Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with their family and friends at this difficult time. " The match was delayed to allow emergency teams to attend the Hive Stadium, which sits adjacent to Murrayfield. Fans in the main stand were asked to remain seated during the first half to keep clear access for crews.

Edinburgh Rugby went on to lose the match 19-40 . Douglas Struth added: "We would like to thank all involved, the emergency services, Ulster Rugby, and our supporters for their hard work, patience and understanding on the night. "
