New, Engaging Fan-Centric Headline: "UWS Baseball Rises to Victory, Claims Title in Exciting Five-Game Series
Mar. 16—The Wisconsin-Superior baseball team won the last six games of its Spring Break trip to Davenport and Winter Haven, Florida, last week to finish with a 7-1 record. After a Sunday, March 8 doubleheader split with Beloit, UWS swept two, 7-2 and 12-9 vs.
Husson on Monday, March 9. That was followed by a 12-1 rout of Fitchburg State on Wednesday, March 11, a 7-3 win over Loras on Thursday, March 12, a 7-1 victory over Greenville on Friday, March 13 and a 5-4 win over Simpson on Saturday, March 14. In the Husson doubleheader, UWS scored five times in the fourth inning.
Brian O'Dwyer had a two-run homer, while Noah Dagostino followed with an RBI double, part of a 3-for-3 performance. In the second game, UWS won with three runs in the top of the eighth on a bases-loaded hit by pitch and Paddy Kelly's two-run single. Against Fitchburg, Niles Monroe threw six scoreless innings and struck out 10, while Tanner Voight paced the offense by going 4-for-5 with four RBIs.
Josh Pritchard threw 6 1/3 scoreless innings for the Yellowjackets vs. Loras and scattered eight hits as UWS easily overcame being outhit 10-7. In the Greenville game, Kaden Corlett and Gio Basile continued the strong pitching with four scoreless innings each, while Chase Oxborough was 3-for-4 and scored twice.
Finally, UWS came from 4-0 down to win the Simpson game with five unanswered runs, including RBI singles by Brian O'Dwyer in back-to-back innings, the latter one including two more runs scoring on a subsequent error. UWS (9-3) is scheduled to return to the field on March 21 and 22 at Saint Mary's in Winona. Wisconsin-Superior had a strong showing in the Space Coast Spring Games at Melbourne, Florida, finishing the trip with a 7-3 record.
