FC Bayern is keeping an eye on keepers to go for in the event Neuer doesn’t renew his contract beyond this season

Manuel Neuer has struggled to recover from a calf problem that’s been troubling him since he was subbed off at halftime in Bayern’s 3-0 win at Werder Bremen back in the beginning of February and Jonas Urbig suffered a concussion in the 6-1 win at Atalanta in leg one of the Champions League Round of 16. With Neuer’s recovery progress already experiencing at least one setback, that complicated things enough for Vincent Kompany, but Urbig’s concussion really threw a spanner in the works for the German Rekordmeister in the midst of a packed schedule. Sven Ulreich deputized for the first time in nearly 18 months for the 1-1 draw at Bayer Leverkusen and the squad in the keeper’s department is so thin at the moment that U-19 keeper Leonard Prescott was called up to be in the team as Ulreich’s backup for the Leverkusen match.
After the match, though, Ulreich mentioned that he felt some discomfort in one of his thighs, hoping that it was nothing too serious — Kompany certainly has those same hopes as the season goes into crunch time. As such, per information from Sport Bild’s Christian Falk and Bild’s Heiko Niedderer (via @iMiaSanMia_GER ), Bayern is very much keeping their eyes and ears open in the transfer market for keepers in the event that Neuer decides not to renew his contract for another season. His contract is set to expire this summer and the club’s front office has maintained they will discuss his future at some point after he turns 40 later this month, but his recent injury troubles could certainly affect things.
The idea would be that Bayern would bring in a keeper with experience to come in and serve as Urbig’s backup, as it was always planned that he would eventually become the number one keeper at Bayern. Ulreich’s future is still uncertain and it has also become clear that Alexander Nübel likely doesn’t have a future at Bayern and thus, will not be challenging Urbig for the number one spot.
