Anthony has established himself as one of the best hitters in the league, despite his young age. However, Whitlock has played just as big a role for Team USA in the tournament. Against the Dominican Republic, Whitlock delivered a three-up, three-down eighth inning with two strikeouts.
He struck out Juan Soto and Manny Machado, two of the best hitters in baseball. After the game, Whitlock got the ultimate compliment from his manager. "Garrett Whitlock is absolutely nasty," DeRosa said after the game, per The Boston Globe's Tim Healey.
Whitlock's strikeout of Machado to end the inning was a slider low and inside that he got Machado to chase. Whitlock has now worked three innings in the World Baseball Classic, and he has five strikeouts, which is tied for sixth most on the team. Whitlock has not allowed a single run, has a save and has recorded two holds in the tournament.
Team USA will face the winner of Venezuela and Italy's matchup in the World Baseball Classic championship game on Tuesday.
