Valley Team Dominates in Majestic Showcase: Legends Light Up Big Stage!
Winter is almost over, it’s tournament time baby!
With the basketball team’s season over, and with the NCAA wrestling tournament ahead, we sit currently in a semi lull between major sporting events that normally might have been filled with idle football chatter. Instead, the men’s and women’s hockey teams are keeping us all on our toes! First up, the women.
The women’s hockey team has been on an absolute tear, first winning their fourth consecutive Atlantic Hockey America conference championship a few weeks ago, beating Mercyhurst 3-2. The team got the 3-seed, and thus a first round bye. In the quarterfinal round this past Friday, the Lions took on UConn, who had just dismantled Princeton 4-1 in the opening round.
Well in less than 2 minutes of play, the Lions scored, and would go on to shut out the Huskies, winning 3-0. With that win, Penn State is headed to its first ever Frozen Four , and will take on 2-seed Wisconsin this coming Friday at 7:30 PM. Pegula Ice Arena is the host for the Frozen Four, which means that the team will get to skate on home ice against the Badgers – and if they win, they’ll play at home for the national championship as well.
The men, meanwhile, appear to all but be a shoo-in for the tournament, but have struggled down the stretch. Most recently, the team made it to the semifinals of the B1G tournament, but exited with a 5-1 loss to #1 Michigan . This may be a bit of a blessing in disguise, because the team has been battling injuries for a while.
