Manchester United's Carrick Faces Crucial Challenge in Red Devils Cup Finals!

Yahoo Sports

Michael Carrick's Old Trafford record essential for Man Utd going forward Manchester United made it five home wins in a row against Aston Villa on Sunday as the Red Devils continued their 2026 bounce. Last time out the Red Devils fell to a 1-0 defeat away to 10-men Newcastle United having failed to take advantage of superior numbers for a second time this season. That result was the culmination of some flat performances under interim boss Michael Carrick but the 3-1 win over Aston Villa was a marked improvement and one that means that Carrick has still won all of his home games in charge of the club.

United have now defeated Manchester City, Fulham, Tottenham Hotspur, Crystal Palace, and Villa at Old Trafford in the Premier League with no other team in the top flight having picked up as many points at home (15) than United. Neighbours City are the closest with 12 from having paid one game further. In general, United haven't been at their best at home in recent years and this season could prove to be one of the better post- Alex Ferguson campaigns in front of their own fans.

Of course, last season was the nadir of United's home record, winning just seven games and losing nine, picking up just 24 points in total. In Ferguson's final campaign, the Red Devils picked up 48 points – double that amount. In fact, the 15 defeats suffered at home from the 2023/24 and 2024/25 seasons combined were just one fewer than the previous five seasons (2018/19 through to 2022/23) combined.

Carrick still has four more home games in charge (at least for now), win all of those and they'd end up on 45 home points in total. Only twice since Sir Alex's retirement have they managed more: 47 in the 2017/18 season under José Mourinho and 52 points picked up in the 2022/23 in Erik ten Hag 's first season. That 52-point season was in fact United's best since the 2010/11 campaign where they were undefeated at home, picking up 55 points (18 wins, 1 draw).

Leeds United, Brentford, Liverpool, and Nottingham Forest are all still to visit Old Trafford this season which is now a far more difficult journey than it once was. Win all of those games and United will not only have their third-best home season since the title-winning campaign, but they'll almost certainly be back in the Champions League.
