Jaraan Cornell is going into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame. His impact on those around him went beyond the court, though.

SOUTH BEND ― Jaraan Cornell is a household name to most in his hometown, but those who knew him best remember him as much more than just a basketball player. A man whose legacy far surpasses one of the most iconic shots in Indiana high school basketball history. That’s what made his sudden passing June 6, 2025 , even harder to take.

It was especially tough for Jaraan’s father, Paul, who also lost his mother, Vivienne, in a 48-hour span. “He was a good person; a good guy,” said Paul of his son. “The kind of person you’d like to be around and hang out with.

He was funny, and he was head strong in everything that he did … People will remember him as being somebody who cared. ” Cornell’s individual accomplishments in the game of basketball are finally set to be recognized statewide Wednesday, March 18, when he is posthumously inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame. This is Cornell's second Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame honor, as he was also a part of the 2021 Silver Anniversary Team, a list of the state’s 18 best players from 25 years prior.
