JACKSONVILLE — The Conference USA schedule threw Jacksonville State softball into the pressure cooker right from the start. But so far, the Gamecocks are proving too tough to chew. After taking two of three last weekend in a league-opening series at CUSA coaches’ favorite Liberty, Jax State swept all three this weekend from No.
4 pick Western Kentucky. No. 2 pick Louisiana Tech visits next weekend.
"One thing that we're working on as a team coming off last year and this year is the determination to stay consistent," said Jax State coach Julie Boland, whose team was selected third in the preseason coaches’ poll. "We want to stay consistent as far as our energy, our attitude, our body language, our hustle, all the all the controllables. We want to stay consistent because I think that makes up a championship team.
" Jax State consistently won all three games in the series the same way — solid hitting, ace pitching and air-tight defense. The Gamecocks won the series opener Friday 4-2 and then took the Saturday game 5-0. The Gamecocks didn't back off Sunday with a 7-1 victory.
That increases their win streak to five straight. It's still early, of course, but Jax State (20-8, 5-1 CUSA) is in first place in the league, while WKU (18-6, 3-3) dropped to seventh. The Gamecocks broke the ice with three runs in the bottom of the third inning.
