Elite Michigan Men's Basketball Embarks on Quest for NCAA Title!

Yahoo Sports

Michigan basketball is a 1-seed in the Midwest. See how the Wolverines' bracket looks via KenPom rankings.

The brackets are set, and we're about to see if Michigan basketball can make good on what has been the best regular season in program history. Though the Big Ten Tournament ended with a loss to Purdue, the Wolverines only dropped one spot from the second overall seed to the third, but still came in as a 1-seed in the Midwest division. The maize and blue have a solid opportunity as they head to Buffalo, New York (and potentially Chicago after), but there are some tough teams in the Wolverines' bracket.

The gold standard for rankings actually isn't those that require votes, and not even the NCAA's NET rankings. But KenPom tells the most robust picture of just how good teams are. With that in mind, here is how all 16 teams look via KenPom overall rank, as well as each team's offensive and defensive ranks in the Midwest region.

1. Michigan (31-3) KenPom rank: 3 Offense rank: 8 Defense rank: 1 2. Iowa State (27-7) KenPom rank: 6 Offense rank: 21 Defense rank: 4 3.

Virginia (29-5) KenPom rank: 13 Offense rank: 27 Defense rank: 16 4. Alabama (23-9) KenPom rank: 18 Offense rank: 3 Defense rank: 67 5. Texas Tech (22-10) KenPom rank: 20 Offense rank: 12 Defense rank: 33 6.
