Man United cruise past Villa to strengthen top-four hopes Manchester United took a major stride towards next season’s Champions League after beating top-five rivals Aston Villa 3-1 in the Premier League at Old Trafford on Sunday. United were in the ascendancy early on, but both sides failed to test either goalkeeper in the opening 20 minutes. However, in the 24th minute, Amad Diallo almost broke the deadlock when he got onto a flick-on, but his header was palmed away by Emiliano Martinez.

Moments later, Bruno Fernandes found Diogo Dalot, but he blasted his effort from close range well over the bar. On the stroke of halftime, Fernandes sent his curling effort wide of the post as both sides went into the break goalless. Eight minutes after the restart, Casemiro gave the Red Devils the lead after he got onto Fernandes’ corner at the near post with a glancing header.

In the 64th minute, Ross Barkley restored parity for the Villans when he met Lucas Digne’s low cross with a first-time strike. However, seven minutes later, United retook the lead via Matheus Cunha after he was found by Fernandes’ defence-splitting pass and he finished into the bottom corner. In the 81st minute, Benjamin Sesko completed the scoring off the bench after his deflected strike nestled into the net, wrongfooting Martinez.

The victory lifts Manchester United three points clear of fourth-placed Villa, reinforcing their hold on third place.
