New Headline: Allie Army Cadet from Hawaii Pacific University Seeks Global Stage in Cadet Competition

The University of Hawaii’s Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps Warrior Battalion will send a team this spring to West Point, N. Y. , to compete in the Sandhurst Military Skills Competition, which brings together teams of cadets and officer candidates from around the world to test their physical fitness and military skills.

UH ROTC sent two teams to the Army ROTC 8th Brigade Ranger Challenge Competition held at Fort Hunter Liggett near Monterey, Calif. in February. They spent 46 hours competing with teams from 34 other ROTC programs across the West Coast, Alaska and Guam—testing physical and mental limits, pushing forward with little food or sleep.

One of the UH teams won first place overall as well as the Commander’s Challenge Cup—an extreme endurance test at the end. Maj. Jake Wright, an instructor with UH ROTC, said “they got the best time, they beat it by over a minute.

” A team from University of California at Santa Barbara won second place. The Hawaii and California teams will go on to compete at Sandhurst, which is hosted by the U. S.

Military Academy at West Point. They’ll make the journey at the end of April for a week of training before competing on May 1 and 2. Cadet Matthew Holdredge, a UH senior majoring in film who will commission as a logistics officer at the end of this semester, led the winning Ranger Challenge team.
