Having started on pole position after making history a day prior as the youngest pole sitter in F1, the Italian driver briefly lost the lead at the start of the race to Lewis Hamilton in the Ferrari.
When he reclaimed his position shortly after he never looked back, taking the checkered flag five seconds ahead of teammate George Russell, who won Saturdayโs sprint . At 19 years and 202 days, Antonelli became the second youngest F1 grand prix winner, trailing only behind Max Verstappen who claimed his maiden victory at 18 years and 228 days in Barcelona back in 2016. Antonelli also became the first Italian race winner since Giancarlo Fisichella two decades ago.
โIโm super happy,โ Antonelli said after the race. โI said yesterday I really wanted to bring Italy back on top and we did today, even though I gave myself a little bit of a heart attack towards the end with the flat-spot. It was a good race.
