The Chicago Bears' left tackle situation is about to take a significant turn as they prepare for training camp. General manager Ryan Poles, who declared there’s “a lot going on at the left tackle position,” expects another job battle between experienced players Braxton Jones and Jedrick Wills Jr. , along with Theo Benedet and Kiran Amegadjie.
According to Poles, it seems unlikely that the Bears will draft a left tackle with their first-round pick next month. Instead, they’re looking for help on defense, and haven’t been able to make a splash move at left tackle since linebacker Roquan Smith was selected in 2018. The coaching staff has zeroed in on Jones as the frontrunner for the job, but Poles knows that Jones’ strength wasn’t where it needed to be last season.
Jones, who turns 27 this month and signed a one-year contract with a base salary of $5 million, is motivated by his desire to prove himself. He’s hoping to earn a multiyear contract in free agency next year and see how far he can take his game at the left tackle position. Wills Jr.
