Two Champions Reign Supreme in Spectacular Performances!
Watchung Hills’ Gabriela Giacone and Hunterdon Central’s Emma Peake each reached a state wrestling final as 20 area girls earned a medal.
ATLANTIC CITY – They wrestled on mats in Brazil and North Dakota and Greece in the offseason. Their objective – get better and make a run at the state tournament. Both Watchung Hills’ Gabriela Giacone and Hunterdon Central’s Emma Peake did just that and their ascent took them all the way to the state championship bout against game opponents on Saturday, March 14.

3-seeded Giacone lost to Lenape Valley/Hopatcong’s Angelina Qualtieri 7-0. The No. 5 seed stunned the top seed Ava Bonilla in the semifinals and was voted the Most Outstanding Wrestler.
At 120, the upset-minded Peake reached the final as the No. 6 seed but lost to High Point’s top-seeded and returning state champion Elle Changaris 12-3. Here is a look at both area wrestlers and a list of medal winners at the bottom.
