Kings Crush Virginia, Cavaliers Dominate in Record-Breaking 16-Game Sweep!
Hokies get one more shot at the Blue Devils on Sunday.
The No. 11 Virginia Tech Hokies were back on the road Friday to Durham to face the 25th-ranked Duke Blue Devils to open ACC play. The Hokies were riding a 15-game winning streak before the Blue Devils stopped them with a 7-6 victory.
Duke jumped on Tech early, drawing three walks in the bottom of the first inning, and the Devils made them pay, blasting a grand slam to open an early 4-0 lead. That lead would grow to 6-0 and the Hokies appeared to have nothing for their opponent on this night. But in true Virginia Tech fashion, the Lady Hokies came storming back.
Down 6-0 to begin the sixth inning, Zoe Yaeger’s solo home run put Tech on the board. Kylie Aldridge followed with a double and and Gaby Mizelle belted a two-run homer and suddenly it was 6-3. They weren’t done.
Tech would score three more in the top of the seventh, as Michelle Chatfield hit a solo shot, making it 6-4. With two runners on, Rachel Castine’s two-run double tied things up and it appeared Tech was about to pull another off. Unfortunately, it wasn’t meant to be as Adelyn Matthews hit a walk-off double to snap the Hokies’ winning streak.
