6 UConn Huskies in the Big East Tournament final on Saturday. That punch resembled one thrown by Muhammad Ali or Mike Tyson or any one of the heavy hitters that fought in the historic New York City arena. St.
John’s earned a 72–52 win in a game it led from the opening seconds through the final buzzer. The Red Storm jumped on the Huskies’ early, scoring the first 10 points. While UConn inched within as close as seven points early in the second half, the game was never in question.
It’s the second straight Big East Tournament crown for St. John’s and its Hall of Fame head coach, Rick Pitino, playing on their homecourt. After also winning the conference’s regular season championship, the Red Storm improved to 28-6 overall.
UConn dropped to 29-5 overall and had its hopes of claiming a one-seed in the NCAA Tournament extinguished. Zuby Ejiofor, St. John’s senior forward, who was both the Big East Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, dominated the Huskies on Saturday.
