The Blue Dukes barely held off a furious rally to win their first girls basketball championship in nine tries at state.

ASHWAUBENON – For the first time in nine trips to the WIAA state girls basketball tournament, the Whitefish Bay Blue Dukes are state champions. The Blue Dukes defeated No. 4 seed Beaver Dam 64-63 in the Division 2 title game with the defensive stop of the decade inside the final five seconds.

They had led by as many as 17 points (47-30) in the second half before Beaver Dam used a 22-4 run in a four-plus-minute span to claw its way back into the game. Whitefish Bay maintained its hot shooting from long range, using nine 3-pointers on 17 total attempts, including three from Maddy Volpe. Madonna Helf banked in a huge triple as time expired in the first half to cap a 7-0 run for the Blue Dukes.

Sage Miskel paced the Blue Dukes in the opening half with 10 points, while Rowan Counsell filled the stat sheet with four points, five rebounds and five assists in the opening 18 minutes. Miskel finished with a game-high 18 points and six rebounds, while Counsell added 10 points, 10 rebounds and five assists in the win. Check back for more on the Division 2 championship game.
